Local Scout Project to Benefit Village Bocce Courts

The rehabilitation of the 2 bocce courts adjacent to the skate house and Duck Pond is the focus of an Eagle Scout project planned for 2019.

Charlie Hummel is a sophomore at Columbia High School, a Life Scout and member of Troop 5 Maplewood BSA.  Charlie’s goal for the coming year is to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. In order to do so, he must plan, develop and give leadership to others in a service project to benefit his community (or an organization other than the BSA).  The project must be approved by the organization benefiting from the effort as well as his Scoutmaster, troop and council.  Successful completion of the Eagle Scout Service Project is the culmination of a Scout’s leadership training and a very high honor.

For his Eagle Scout Service Project, Charlie Hummel has developed plans to rehabilitate the two bocce courts adjacent to the Duck Pond in Meadowland Park in South Orange.  The plans include raising the necessary funds to purchase the materials and to provide the leadership and labor required to complete the project. Materials needed to reconstruct the courts include wood, hardware and paint for the framing and crushed stone for resurfacing.  Charlie will also need to provide supplies for his work crew, including tarps, tools, safety gloves, garbage bags, batteries and first aid materials. Finally, Charlie plans to donate two new bocce ball sets to the Village.

South Orange Village completed the renovation of the skate house in early 2018 and welcomes the planned improvement of the nearby bocce courts.  The hope is that Charlie’s efforts will lead to renewed interest in bocce and provide a more enjoyable playing experience for members of the community.  His plan is to raise money through the winter, begin work in the spring and complete the project in the summer of 2019.  If you would like to help Charlie Hummel with his Eagle Scout Project, you can make a donation via his go fund me page HERE.
