KINDERENRICHMENT AT THE BAIRD

Kinderenrichment at The Baird is available to children entering the South Orange/ Maplewood School District’s kindergarten classes each fall.  The program coincides with the school year calendar and is intended to supplement the district’s half-day kindergarten.

Kinderenrichment at The Baird was conceived of and developed by Laurie Tyree, the program instructor. Mrs. Tyree is an experienced, state certified teacher with a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and a Masters in education from Bank Street College in New York City.  She has strived to develop a program that both delights and challenges students. Children will encounter a wide range of playful learning experiences designed to reinforce and extend their kindergarten experience.  An outline of each day’s schedule follows.

LOCATION
Kinderenrichment classes are held in a dedicated space on the second floor of The Baird, 5 Mead Street, South Orange.

ELIGIBILITY
This program is open to all South Orange and Maplewood kindergarteners.

CLASS SIZE
Each class will have no more than eight students.

THE SCHEDULE
There are four different sessions of Kinderenrichment offered at The Baird each year.

There are two sessions offered 3 days per week:

• Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings:  9:15-11:15 am
• Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons: 1:00-3:00 pm

There are two sessions offered 2 days per week:

• Tuesday and Thursday mornings:  9:15-11:15 am
• Tuesday and Thursday afternoons:  1:00-3:00 pm

The Kinderenrichment calendar typically begins the second full week in September and concludes the first week of June.

HOLIDAYS - SCHOOL VACATIONS & INCLEMENT WEATHER
The Kinderenrichment program follows all South Orange/Maplewood Board of Education school closure policies. There are no classes when the public schools are closed.  On days the public schools have delayed openings, the morning programs will be cancelled and the afternoon classes will be held. 

REGISTRATION
Registration forms and complete program details, including application dates and fees for the next program year, can be obtained at The Baird and online at http://southorange.recware.com.

Registration for Kinderenrichment at The Baird is open to all South Orange and Maplewood families.  Parents interested in enrolling their children are asked to submit application forms during the initial two-week registration period in January.  Applications are taken as follows:

• Those currently enrolled in The Baird Preschool four-year-old class receive priority registration for Kinderenrichment at The Baird. These families submit their applications during the first week of the registration period.

• New student applications are accepted during the 2nd week of the registration period. APPLICATIONS ARE NOT TAKEN FIRST COME/FIRST SERVE.  A random drawing is held at the end of the registration period to determine the order of the “waiting list”.

Class assignments and registration cannot take place until the school district has notified all incoming kindergarten students of their morning or afternoon placement. Once those letters have been sent (typically the 2nd or 3rd week in July), all families on the waiting list will be contacted IN THE ORDER ESTABLISHED BY THE RANDOM DRAWING. Based on the child's kindergarten placement and his/her place on the waiting list, classes are assigned until all are fully enrolled. Two new waiting lists are then formed, one for the morning classes and one for the afternoon classes.
