Barry Harris, Jazz Master Award Honoree:

As an internationally renowned jazz pianist, composer and teacher, Barry Harris is highly respected and celebrated as one of the “quintessential keepers of bepob.” Holding an honorary Doctorate from Northwestern University , Dr. Harris has devoted his life to the advancement of jazz and has been acclaimed as “ One of the great jazz educators ever…a one man jazz movement.” In addition, Harris has received countless awards for his high caliber of contributions. They include the prestigious “Living Jazz Legend” bestowed by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Arts and “Recognition for Outstanding Achievement and Contributions to the Jazz Genre and the Music Community” – a distinction he shared with fellow legends Oscar Peterson and Hank Jones.

10th Celebratory Anniversary

Every fall, on one stage, for one night, the musician list reads like a “Who’s Who of Jazz.” Reviewers marvel at the annual turnout of so many jazz greats, noting that many major weekend jazz festivals do not equal the dazzling line-up Giants of Jazz presents in one night. Musicians revel in the spontaneity and fluidity of the evening, commenting “This is how concerts used to be!” Standing-room-only audiences from near and far respond with roof-raising excitement. And community volunteers put their hearts and souls into pulling every last detail tog
