The New York Times called Giants of Jazz the “premier (jazz) festival in the state.”

Zan Stewart, jazz critic for the Star Ledger stated “[Giants of Jazz] is easily one of the top jazz show of the year...anywhere.”

In 1998, the cream of the jazz world came to take part in Giants of Jazz, an amazing standing-room-only performance. Now in its sixteenth year, Giants of Jazz has become an annual music phenomenon – literally a one-night festival that has established South Orange as a major New Jersey venue for world-class jazz.

A Giants of Jazz highlight each year is the presentation of the South Orange Jazz Masters Award to a distinguished artist whose creativity has had a major impact on jazz performance and/or education. Previous recipients include renowned musicians George Coleman, Jimmy Heath, James Moody, Clark Terry, Frank Wess, Benny Powell, Dr. Billy Taylor, Frank Foster and Marian McPartland, and Slide Hampton.

2013 Jazz Master: Gary Bartz
Gary Bartz (born September 26, 1940, Baltimore, Maryland) is an American alto and soprano saxophonist and clarinetist. He is universally recognized as the greatest alto saxophonist of his generation. Bartz graduated from the Baltimore City College high school and The Juilliard School.

His break into the music industry came when filling in with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers at his father's club in Baltimore. Bartz has played and recorded with Chick Corea, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Max Roach, McCoy Tyner, Woody Shaw, Donald Byrd, Roy Hargrove, and Jackie McLean. His group the "Ntu Troop" combined soul, funk, African music, hard bop, and avant-garde jazz.  As a leader he has recorded 33 CDs to date.

In the liner notes to his 1994 album The Red and Orange Poems, jazz critic Stanley Crouch calls Bartz "one of the very best who has ever picked up the instrument". In 1998 he won a Grammy Award for playing on Roy Hargrove’s Crisol album Habana, and another in 2005 for playing on McCoy Tyner's album Illuminations.  Bartz teaches at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music when not touring.
