Exhibition The Pierro Gallery of South Orange and adjacent spaces presents a major New Jersey blockbuster exhibition, Singularity in the Communal Tide; Culture and Identity in the Moment, that features an international group of thirty one significant contemporary artists whose work examines the individual self revealed in the ever-increasing world collective. For many artists, their process of art-making is the synthesis of their culture with their personal identity; they embrace their background, ancestry, countries, religions, and rituals. Others reflect on culture with “popular” in mind and yet others who reveal an historical context. How is individualistic identity maintained in a world exchanging fast-moving, fast-tracking, fast-absorbing information, ideas and knowledge? How is cultural uniqueness fostered and cherished in a time of shifting cores and the obscuring of familial structure through mobilization? Singularity in the Communal Tide is the artist’s attempt to break through this globalized framework in search of their personal, identifying marks. Curator Rupert Ravens, who recently curated the widely acclaimed “Newark Between Us” with 97 artists from around the world installed as a Biennial Style exhibition, states “Through their individual visible creations and actions, artists’ awareness and perceptions become the inimitable identifiers of the conscious experience of local societies. However, their accomplished expressions simultaneously probe and enhance our collective sensibilities regardless of geographic origin.” Among the significant artists featured are Fred Wilson from New York, who represented the United States in the Venice Biennale ’03; Victor Ampliev from Russia, represented in the Berlin Biennale ’06; Nicolos Hlobo from South Africa, as well as Willie Cole, Newark, Tom Nussbaum, Montclair and others. The Pierro Gallery is located in The Baird, 5 Mead Street, South Orange. All events are free and wheelchair accessible with large print listings.
