The Village Clerk statutorily serves as secretary to the Board of Trustees by recording, handling municipal correspondence, preparing meeting agendas, processing, recording, filing and advertising ordinances, resolutions, the municipal budget and bids for municipal equipment and supplies, acting as a liaison between the public and the governing body, administering and recording oaths of office, maintaining custody of all official records not specifically handled by other departments.

By statute, the Village Clerk also serves as secretary of the municipal corporation by maintaining custody of the municipal seal, signing the majority of official documents, attesting the signatures of municipal officers and officials and maintaining receipt of service of legal documents. New Jersey statutes also require the Village Clerk to serve as an election official by registering voters, certifying vacancies existing on the local level, maintaining receipt of nominating petitions and certifying to the county clerk the local candidates nominated by petition exercising quasi-judicial authority in determining the validity of petitions, conducting the drawing for position of candidates on the local ballot furnishing material for local elections, selecting polling places, certifying to the county clerk persons elected to partisan county committee offices in each election district and canvassing the votes for and certifying the election of candidates for local office at the municipal election.

Lastly, the Village Clerk serves statutorily as an administrative official by issuing various licenses, furnishing data to public information media, providing records and information management and directing correspondence and inquiries for action to various municipal departments.
