CURB SIDE PICKUP RECYCLING:
TOTERS:
Both South Orange homes and businesses should be equipped with BLUE and/or GREEN 96 gallon capacity toters that may be purchased from the Public Works Department (see below).
Toters are emptied once per month through curbside pickup (see schedule below).
BLUE toters are used for the curbside pickup of high-grade paper only that includes magazines, soft-cover books, phone books, computer paper, coupons, direct-mail ads, notebook and school paper, flyers, brochures, NCR paper and shredded paper. Hardcover books may be included only after the covers are removed and discarded in regular garbage. Any excess can be tied in bundles and placed alongside the toter.
Pickup days are on the last Thursday of each month except in November and December due to Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. See current schedule for alternate pickup dates due to holidays.
GREEN toters are used for the pickup of newspaper only. Excess can be tied into manageable bundles and stacked along side the toter.
A black insert is provided and used for commingled glass, food and beverage containers (Aluminum and Ferrous Cans), #1 Plastic bottles, #2 Natural Plastic containers (milk & water jugs) and Pigmented Plastic containers (detergent, shampoo, bleach etc) - note: any excess may be placed along side the Green toter in as many 20 gal hard plastic containers with handles as necessary.
The pickup day schedule is available on the web site and copies are mailed each December as a “pullout” section in the Gaslight. Additional copies can be obtained at the South Orange Library, Baird Community Center, Village Hall and the Public Works office at the Recycling Depot located at 300 Walton Avenue.
Toters are placed at the curb in the driveway at dark the night before scheduled pickup days or no later than 7 AM on date of pickup.
Please carefully follow the schedule – a toter that is not properly filled or placed cannot be emptied.
Toters are not to be used for garbage of any type.
The elderly and disabled may contact the Public Works Office at 973-378-7741 to arrange for special assistance in the pickup of their toters.
Toters may be purchased from the Public Works Department. You may obtain an order form HERE or by calling the Public Works Office at 973-378-7741.
GREEN toters are $88.00 each BLUE toters are $75.00 each
Aluminum Disposal Alternative
As an alternative to regular pickup or drop off at the DPW recycling center, residents may take their aluminum cans to the South Orange Firehouse (note: due to construction at the Firehouse please use the recycling center).
Funds generated from firehouse recycling of aluminum are contributed to the St. Barnabas Hospital Children’s Burn Center in a program called “ACBC” – “Aluminum Cans for Burned Children”.
