Position:Director of Cultural Affairs (Interim Full or Part Time)  
 

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The interim Director of Cultural Affairs for the Township of South Orange Village is responsible for managing cultural arts programming within the municipality’s Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department. This position encompasses artistic and administrative responsibilities, including advancing the vision and mission of cultural arts within the community.

This position provides development, oversight and implementation of programming, including marketing, publicity, fundraising, outreach, collaborations, and management of operating budgets for cultural arts programming. Cultural arts programming currently includes: developing and overseeing thematic exhibitions and programming in a fine arts gallery; producing concerts and performances; and, developing and maintaining educational and outreach programming.

This position serves as the municipality’s cultural arts’ interface to the artistic, local, and broader communities. The Director also works as l iaison with community organizations, businesses, institutions, and the municipality to collaboratively leverage cultural arts as a tool for economic development.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Education:

Graduation from at least a four-year program concentrated in arts administration or related subjects, such as visual or performing arts, at an accredited college or university. [Note: applicants who do not meet this educational requirement, may substitute additional work experience, as described below, on a year-for-year basis.]

Experience:

At least five (5) years of work experience, including at least two (2) years experience developing, planning, administering, and stimulating public interest in cultural arts programs in an organization concerned with: (a) fine or applied arts and/or (b) performing arts.

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the practices, methods, and principles relating to administrative processes and responsibilities, such as policy and procedures formulation, personnel and fiscal management, contract, property and equipment management, and public information.
  • Knowledge of the various organizations and facilities whose programs and services relate to fine arts, applied arts, and performing arts.
  • Ability to integrate a unit's administrative services with its functional program and with the general administration of a public jurisdiction or agency.
  • Ability to represent and speak on behalf of the interests and needs of the general public, organized groups, and organizations.
  • Ability to evaluate program actions, policies, and accomplishments.
  • Ability to promote public interest in program activities using standard methods and techniques in the preparation (writing and editing), and dissemination of information in the form of brochures, flyers, newsletters, advertising, and in the use of public communication media.
  • Ability to give talks before professional and non-professional groups interested or concerned with the varied programs relating to the cultural arts.
  • Ability to coordinate program services in order to achieve maximum efficiency and proper utilization of available funds (including seeking grants), personnel, equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Ability to deal effectively with and work well with individuals or groups representing divergent backgrounds, interests, and points of view.
  • Ability to communicate with others effectively, both orally and in writing and in working out solutions to problems or questions relating to the work.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
  • Ability to work flexible hours to supervise evening and weekend activities.
