AAPI Heritage Month 2021

Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month is observed annually in May to celebrate the contributions that generations of AAPIs have made to American history, society, and culture in the United States. Asian/Pacific encompasses all of the Asian continent and the Pacific islands of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia.
South Orange Village and Maplewood Township have joined forces to celebrate AAPI Heritage Month, 2021 and are offering a line-up of activities, projects and events that highlight the AAPI heritage in our community!

SOMA Wishing Trees

SOMA Wishing Trees for an end to all anti-Asian racism and in honor of all in the AAPI community directly and indirectly affected by violence and hate.
Make a wish. Write it on a tag. Red represents Strength and Luck | White represents Mourning. Tie your tag to the string on the SOMA wishing trees for Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May 2021. In South Orange, pick up your tags at Sparkhouse or Kitchen a la Mode and hang it on the Wishing Tree in Spiotta Park.

SOMA on the Move- May 5, 10:30 AM; Baird parking lot
Come walk with SOMA Two Towns and South Mountain Rehab. Physical Therapists will show you how to stretch and loosen your muscles. Come get some giveaways and copies of the SOMA on the Move walking maps. Masks are required.

SOMA Grieving & Loss Support Group- Thursdays at 4 PM. Join the conversation to find a warm and accepting community to connect with. Group meetings are held on Thursdays at 4 PM. DPW Events

Container Day- On Saturday, May 8, South Orange residents are welcome to drop off household bulk items at the Public Works facility between 8 am and 1:30 pm. Proof of residency is required and no commercial vehicles (U-Haul's/ Home Depot rental vans) are permitted on the property. Electronics, construction material, and hazardous waste will not be accepted at these events. Follow this link for more info.

Summer Saturdays

Summer Saturdays are back! South Orange Downtown is your go-to destination for live music, local shopping and great dining. Join us every Saturday for live music in the downtown as music pods pop up in front of your favorite local businesses during the day and in the Sloan Street Parking Lot at night.
