In celebration of Black History Month and this year’s national theme, A Century of Black History Commemorations, the South Orange Public Library is proud to present a curated weekly booklist series designed to educate, inspire, and empower young readers and families across our community.
Each week, the South Orange Public Library (SOPL) thoughtfully prepares and releases a new themed booklist aligned with one of our four subthemes:
- Week 1: No Sidekicks Here
- Week 2: Loving Our Families
- Week 3: Inspired by Our History
- Week 4: Turning Knowledge Into Action
These collections highlight powerful stories that center Black children, families, leaders, and changemakers—past and present—while encouraging learning, pride, curiosity, and action.
All titles featured in the weekly lists are available through the South Orange Public Library. If a book is not currently on the shelves at SOPL, it will be accessible through the BCCLS (Bergen County Cooperative Library System), ensuring every family has access to these important stories.
The booklists are curated for all age levels, from birth through high school, making them a valuable resource for families, educators, caregivers, and students alike.
New booklists will be released every Friday morning throughout Black History Month.
Join us each week as we celebrate Black excellence, history, culture, identity, and impact—through stories that educate, affirm, and inspire the next generation.
