Jitney History

The Jitney service began in July 2002 with one route and two buses.
As a designated “Transit Village” South Orange was eligible for transportation grants.
The Village applied for and received a “Community Shuttle Grant” from New Jersey Transit, which provided funding and two buses, free of charge.
Over the years we have grown the service to the present four routes and seven buses.
The grant funding is no longer available and the jitney service is co-funded by the Village and the Parking Authority.
