Public Works

South Orange Village’s Department of Public Works is a dedicated professional team maintaining the Village’s infrastructure; including municipal grounds and buildings, parks, street signs, roadways* , sewers, and municipal owned trees, as well as additional recycling beyond the curbside system. The DPW offers additional services,** some seasonal, and others throughout the year.

**Trash Collection: The Village of South Orange does not provide curbside trash pickup to residents. Trash pickup must be contracted for with a private vendor.

Mulch & Humus Pickup and Delivery

Residents in need of humus (decomposed leaves) or shredded wood (double hammer-milled, medium-textured, hardwood mulch) for their gardens may pick up these materials in small quantities for free throughout the year at the DPW Recycling Center (300 Walton Ave.) or for a delivery fee of $65, receive loads of 2-5 cubic yards (by appointment, select dates only, see calendar). Please note: Sign up for 2026 deliveries starting in mid January. Mulch and humus are still available for pick up at the yard in small quantities.


Household Bulk Pickup

One day a month, the DPW will pick up large bulk items curbside for residents who have scheduled and paid for this service. There is a $100.00 fee and a six item limit. Household bulk pickup excludes metal items, hazardous waste, construction material, and electronics. Check the calendar for the next pickup day, and complete the household bulk pickup form at least 1 day in advance of pickup to be sure you make the scheduled date. House Bulk Order Form


Metal Bulk Pickup

One day a month, the DPW will pick up large metal items curbside for residents who have scheduled and paid for this service. There is a $80.00 fee and a six item limit. This includes refrigerators (doors removed), dehumidifiers, and air conditioning units. This pickup excludes all non-metal items, hazardous waste, construction material, and electronics. Check the calendar for the next pickup day, and complete the metal bulk pickup form at least 1 day in advance of pickup to be sure you make the scheduled date. 


Container Days 

On Container Days South Orange residents may drop off large bulk household items at the DPW Facility and Recycling Center at 300 Walton Avenue from 8 am until 1:30 pm (Gates close at 1:30 pm). Exclusions: tires, electronics, hazardous waste, and construction material. Commercial vehicles are not permitted to enter the facility (no commercial plates, U-hauls, Home Depot vehicles, etc.) Proof of residency may be requested. 
Container Days are generally held on the 3rd Saturday of April, May, June, July, August, and September. Check the calendar for details.


Paper Shredding Events

The Village holds two paper shredding events each year for residents to dispose of confidential documents at no cost. Proof of residency is required and commercial vehicles will not be permitted into the yard. Check the calendar for specific dates.
